Healing Imagery
by: Laura Silva Quesada
Imagery that involves all sensory channels can help in building hope, optimism,
humor, attitude, and, emotional empowerment. Imagery can also influence the
placebo effect and goal setting. Imagery can be considered the blueprint for
all voluntary behaviors and exerts a vital influence on involuntary physical,
emotional and mental behaviors. Imagery takes place all the time at may
different levels in the individual. One of the goals is to facilitate a person
in changing images destructive to health and well being to ones promoting a
healthy body and quality life.
Imagery for specific conditions needs to be inclusive of the person's whole
life - mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical being. The primary goal is to
realign our energies with universal energies, focusing on balance and harmony
and regaining our unity with the "divine order of things." The second goal is
to reconnect with oneself, with others, and with the flow of the universe. The
third goal is to focus on the disease by identifying the problem, symptoms, and
holistically conquering it.
The focus needs to be on the journey and living the most joyous, high quality
life one can imagine. Physical healing indeed may be a side effect, but it is
not a necessary outcome. The focus is on living life to the fullest and seeing
any physiological change as a delightful by-product. Some studies indicate that
the person who is focused only on the medical change is less likely to achieve
it than the person who focuses on living well and making each day of his life a
masterpiece. In fact, the person who persists in aiming only at the physical
changes may receive little or no benefit from this type of application. Seeing
one's disease as a gift allows one to image and live his life in a new and
healthier way.
Guidelines:
-
Guided imagery must be consistent with the core beliefs of the individual. It
must be in line with the deepest values of the individual and must include
one's world view.
-
Existing imagery about disease, health, values, and the effects of the disease
on the body must be taken into consideration.
-
Imagery must reflect deep personal meaning.
-
The disease symbol must always be seen as weak, dumb, non-aggressive, small,
compliant, tamable, manageable, and powerless.
-
The healing symbol must always be seen as powerful, smart, quick, active,
clear, capable, and larger than the disease image.
-
Any and all treatment must be seen as effective and selective, suppressing only
what needs suppression without negative side effects to any other part of the
body.
-
Restoring balance and wholeness needs to be part of all the images. How it
happens may be best left for the body, brain, and mind to figure out.
-
The disease image must be seen as completely gone, and the body perfectly
healthy at the end of every meditation or imagery session.
